CCPS announces new administrative appointments, effective 2026-2027 school year

Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) today announces the appointment of a new elementary school principal, effective July 1.  

Kayla Hawkins, assistant principal at J.P. Ryon Elementary School, has been appointed as principal at Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School. Her appointment is effective July 1. Hawkins has been an administrator with CCPS since 2021 and moves into the principal role at Dr. Brown to replace current principal Karen Lewis, who will retire at the end of June.

Hawkins has been an assistant principal at Ryon since 2023 and previously supported the Billingsley Elementary School community as an assistant principal from 2021-2023. Prior to joining CCPS, Hawkins was an elementary and instructional resource teacher with Prince George’s County Public Schools for eight years.

Staff and parents in the impacted school communities were notified of Hawkins’ appointment today.

The Board of Education at its April Board meeting approved the appointment.
